Pivot Point Sculpture Practice Test

Lighting acts like sculpting with light, carving the surface by casting shadows and highlights on the planes of the head. When light hits from a particular angle, some planes catch the light while others fall into shadow, and that pattern of light and shade makes depth readable. This interplay helps the viewer see how the brow, cheeks, and jaw are organized into distinct planes and how one plane transitions to another, which clarifies the overall form. The direction of the light matters: side or angled lighting enhances edges and the changes between planes, while frontal lighting can flatten the read but still shows the planes when there is enough contrast. While lighting can influence color perception and, if too dim, hide details, its primary role in reading a head sculpture is to define depth, emphasize planes, and clarify form.
